On Saturday 23 August, Rakytovce will celebrate the 730th anniversary of the first written mention of the village. The town of Banská Bystrica has organised an interesting all-day programme at the Na Bani Amphitheatre from 12:30 to 22:00.

730 years of history

The first written mention of Rakytovce dates back to 1295, when the Hungarian King Andrew III gifted the village to Mikuláš of Badín. The village was established on the site of two ploughlands set aside from the Badín district, not far from Kremnička. Originally, there were two settlements — Horný and Dolný Rakytovec — which later merged into a single village.

The original preserved name was Rakolcz. The present-day form, Rakytovce, was established in 1927.

Pride in its own past

Although the village was incorporated into Banská Bystrica on 1 January 1971, it has retained its rural character, community spirit and rich traditions. Preserved from the past are the Classicist bell tower with its historic bells and the manor house of the Rakytovský family, later also of the Chudobovci and Badínyovci families.

A reminder of the mining past is the 120-metre-long Jozef adit. Coal mining took place here from 1837 until it was finally discontinued in 1929.

The local residents are still proud of the work of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, which was founded in 1924.
