The inscription ‘Provereno, mín net’

A memento of the liberation of Rakytovce on 21 March 1945, left behind by Soviet soldiers.

Historický nápis Provereno mín net v Rakytovciach

Rakytovce was liberated on 21 March 1945 by soldiers of the 50th and 51st Rifle Corps of the 40th Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front. The fighting for the village was brief but intense — the Ujhelyi family tomb in the cemetery was damaged by an artillery shell.

After the liberation, Soviet soldiers left an inscription on house no. 35 reading ‘Provereno, mín net’ — which translates as ‘Checked, no mines’. This inscription informed other passing units that the area had been cleared of mines and was safe.

The inscription on the house remained visible for many years after the war as a silent reminder of the liberation. Today it has disappeared, but its memory lives on in the recollections of Rakytovce’s older residents and in the village’s monograph.
