A stone cross by the roadside

A traditional wayside cross — a silent witness to the lives of several generations of Rakytovce residents.

Kamenný kríž v Rakytovciach

The stone cross in Rakytovce is a typical example of 19th-century folk sacred architecture in the Slovak countryside. These crosses — often referred to as ‘wayside crosses’ or ‘roadside crosses’ — were an integral part of the landscape and the lives of the inhabitants of rural villages.

The Rakytovský Cross has stood in its present location for over a hundred years and has become a silent witness to the lives of several generations of local residents. For the faithful, it is a place for a brief prayer; for visitors, it is an architectural and historical landmark.

To this day, the cross serves as a reminder of the village’s Christian heritage and is a place of pilgrimage for the local community, particularly during festivals and processions.
