On 1 May, the traditional Maypole-raising celebration took place once again in Rakytovce. Together, we continued to uphold one of the oldest Slavic traditions, which symbolises the arrival of spring, fertility and life.
A tradition that unites us
The Maypole — a tall, decorated tree — is erected every year on 30 April or 1 May. In many villages across Slovakia, this custom is still alive today, and Rakytovce is one of them. The tree symbolises joy, spring and community spirit.
How it took place
The maypole was prepared by volunteers, cleaned and decorated with colourful ribbons. Together, we erected it to the accompaniment of music and choral singing. Once it was in place, we sat down together for refreshments and a get-together with the neighbours.
Acknowledgements
We would like to thank everyone who helped with the preparations and the raising of the maypole — especially the Rakytovce Volunteer Fire Brigade, which has kept this tradition alive for many years. We would also like to thank all the residents who came along and supported this community event with their presence.
We look forward to getting together and continuing to preserve what makes Rakytovce so special.
